According to the National Student Support Accelerator (NSSA), about 60 % of 4th-grade students were not proficient in math or reading even before the pandemic, and students from low-income communities and Black and Latino/a students faced significantly lower proficiency levels. Research shows that high-impact tutoring — defined as tutoring three or more times per week by consistent, trained tutors aligned with classroom instruction — produces an average of over four additional months of learning in elementary literacy and nearly ten months in high school math.
In partnership with the Al Wooten Jr. Youth Center, CalSAC is launching a two-part training series that highlights the importance of this research-based approach. These trainings are the first step in a broader learning journey. Through these modules, OST program leaders will gain a clear understanding of what’s required for successful implementation, the partnerships needed, and the staffing considerations essential to bringing high-impact tutoring to life in their programs.
What is High-Impact Tutoring?
The NSSA defines high-impact tutoring as personalized, high-quality instruction in one-on-one or small-group settings that creates positive relationships between tutors and students, motivating and engaging. Numerous studies confirm its strong benefits. Importantly, “tutoring” can vary in its characteristics and therefore effectiveness.
