High quality programs intentionally build collaborative relationships among families, schools and the community. These modules introduce methods for enhancing communication and collaboration among out-of-school time programs and the families, schools, communities of the children and youth served
For the success of a program, it is important that program staff recognize and accept family members as partners. Staff must acknowledge their feelings about families and discuss how these feelings help or hinder working with a family as the first step to developing good communication and positive relationships with families.
This training helps participants develop stronger partnerships with families and find effective ways of involving families in their program. Program staff can draw on their own experiences to reflect on the roles of family as nurturer, advocate, and policymaker for their child/youth. Understanding the variety of ways a family supports their child/youth’s learning and development can help staff to recognize and value these roles among the family members with whom they work.
Program staff must listen, with respect and affirmation, to the concerns of a child/youth’s family and accept the validity of the family’s point of view. Well-developed communication skills enable staff to convey respect and concern by focusing attention on the child/youth’s needs while underscoring respect for the family through attentive listening and openness to the family’s point of view.
During this training, participants will discuss out-of-school time program connections with the school day stakeholders and how to strengthen those partnerships.
