Power and Purpose: Exploring Harms to Heal

During this training, participants will explore the two ways young people can experience harm that can impact their mental health and well-being. The role of out-school time staff in supporting young people heal from harm starts with understanding importance of recognizing young people’s culture and understanding the types of power that impact youth and staff. From this point, staff can begin to support young people and themselves with healing, which starts with creating space for self-care. 

In this training, participants will:

  • Examine personal and societal attitudes toward youth

  • Gain a foundational understanding of a power analysis and its impact on youth and self

  • Reflect on how youth and self respond to and challenge the misuse of power

Welcome and Setting the Stage

What is Culture? 

Participants will engage in an activity that reframes working with youth as cross-cultural work.

Power Analysis 

Participants will explore how historical, institutional and people power operate. 

Creating a Circle of Care  

Participants will identify practices that are supportive in managing self wellness and youth wellness while navigating systems of power.
