Strategies for Language Development

This module was originally developed as part of the English Learner Training and Professional Development Project, and was later revised and adapted for virtual delivery in 2021 as part of the Multilingual Learner Training Project.

During this training, participants will review general, research-based strategies to support Multilingual Learners (MLs) with language development, and practice modifying activities to support MLs with language acquisition.

In this training participants will:

  • review general strategies to support Multilingual Learners with English language development;

  • Practice modifying activities in order to support academics and language development.

Content Overview: 

Tea Party Quotes

Participants take turns pairing up to read quotes from Multilingual Learners. This will prepare them to understand some of the experiences MLs have as they learn English.

General EL Strategies Review

Participants will review different strategies with implementation examples to support English language development that can be integrated into different aspects of a program.

Modifying an Activity

Participants practice modifying common after-school activities to address the linguistic and academic needs of Multilingual Learners.
