Knowing Multilingual Learners

This module was originally developed as part of the English Learner Training and Professional Development Project, and was later revised and adapted for virtual delivery in 2021 as part of the Multilingual Learner Training Project.

During this training, participants will understand Multilingual Learner typologies and explore ways to meet the needs of different multilingual learner populations.

In this training participants will:

  • learn basic facts about Multilingual Learners in California;

  • learn about the different typologies of multilingual learners;

  • begin exploring how to meet the needs of different multilingual learner populations.

Exploring Multilingual Learner Typologies

Through this activity, participants learn about the different Multilingual Learner Typologies. 

Introducing Coaching and Action-Planning Toolkit

Participants become familiar with the activities and tools they will be taking back to their programs to implement with the rest of their staff to help them understand their ML population better and institute targeted strategies to meet the needs of their MLs.

Training Length: 2 hours

Social-Emotional Factors of Multilingual Learners

This module was originally developed as part of the English Learner Training and Professional Development Project, and was later revised and adapted for virtual delivery in 2021 as part of the Multilingual Learner Training Project.

During this training, participants will understand and identify common social-emotional factors affecting multilingual learners.

In this training participants will:

  • review general strategies to support Multilingual Learners with language development;

  • practice modifying activities in order to support academics and support language development.

Multilingual Learner Student Profiles

Participants have a chance to reflect on a Multilingual Learner student they know and think about what they know about them.

Social-Emotional Factors

This activity introduces participants to the most common social-emotional factors that Multilingual Learners grapple with which often affect achievement and participation in school, as well as recent political shifts.  

Reviewing Coaching and Action-Planning Toolkit

Participants become familiar with the activities and tools they will be taking back to their programs to implement with the rest of their staff to help them understand their ML population better and institute targeted strategies to meet the needs of their MLs.

Tea Party Quotes

Participants take turns pairing up to read quotes from Multilingual Learners. This will prepare them to understand some of the experiences MLs have as they learn English.

General EL Strategies Review

Participants will review different strategies with implementation examples to support English language development that can be integrated in different aspects of a program.

Modifying an Activity

Participants practice modifying common after school activities to address the linguistic and academic needs of Multilingual Learners.
