CalSAC Welcomes Allen Fernandez Smith as Executive Director

Allen F. Smith CalSAC's Board of Directors is pleased to announce the appointment of Allen Fernandez Smith as the Organization's next Executive Director.

Kindling a new era of leadership and direction for CalSAC, Al leaves the San Francisco   Mayor's Office of Community Investment where he is recognized and admired as an effectual community organizer. As Senior Community Development Specialist & Community Builder, Al has inspired those around him with his tireless efforts revamping economic strategy programs in some of the City's most underserved neighborhoods. Gaining recognition for his considerable achievements connecting City agencies with community leaders and small business owners, Al is a proven collaborator.

Al's prior accomplishments include creating San Francisco's first-ever coordinated afterschool system, SF Afterschool for All. As a Planner and Policy Analyst at the San Francisco Department of Children, Youth and Families (DCYF), Al passionately united San Francisco's diverse afterschool community and stakeholders to further the goal of safe, quality afterschool programs for all children by 2010. Gaining nationwide recognition from the National Afterschool Association (NAA) in 2008, SF Afterschool for All was distinguished as a definitive model for collaboration of afterschool workforce development, community engagement and youth programming.

Originally from Chicago, Al moved to Boston to attend Harvard University's John F. Kennedy School of Government, where he earned a Master in Public Policy and met his then-future wife, Kay. He also discovered his passion for youth development and afterschool, while working as Education Coordinator for Boston Public Schools. Upon Kay's completion of her degree program, Al followed her back to California where they were married. Making Oakland their home, Al and Kay recently welcomed their first child, Malcolm, born in December 2008.

The entire CalSAC family welcomes Al as we begin the next chapter of CalSAC's 27 year history. We are proud and honored to have Al Fernandez Smith, much-respected and accomplished leader and youth role-model, at our helm. We look forward to our journey together!
