Homework Central is an after-school tutoring, homework assistance, and enrichment program for third, fourth, and fifth graders in the San Mateo-Foster City Unified School District. For over 20 years, we have served 90-100 children annually from 50-60 families, with a total of 500 youth identified as eligible for the program. Eligibility includes qualifying for free or reduced lunch and display of need for academic support outside of school. Homework Central steps in to fill the gap and meet a growing need in North Central San Mateo.



HWC is currently seeking Site Coordinators in San Mateo, CA. This is a part-time position responsible for the safety, supervision, and instruction of elementary school students in the after-school program. Site Coordinators provide homework assistance aw well as academic and enrichment activities. The pay for this position is $25 per hour and is commensurate with qualifications and experience of the individual candidate. The hours for this position will range from 15-20 hours weekly. The typical work schedule is Monday through Friday from 2pm to 6pm, though hours may vary. All part-time positions follow the school calendar, and candidates should expect fewer work assignments during holiday breaks and summer vacation.



  • Provide a safe and supportive environment for students, staff, and volunteers

  • Support relationship building among volunteers, staff, and students

  • Support students and tutors with day-to-day homework tutoring

  • Organize and distribute healthy snacks for students daily

  • Ensure all students are engaging with the technology in a meaningful way

  • Assist and participate in HWC events (5 over the course of the school year)

  • Assign regular duties to support staff

  • Monitor staff and volunteers to ensure students stay on task

  • Support site staff and volunteers in cases of student misbehavior

School Partnership

  • Build and maintain relationships with the staff at the elementary school attended by students

  • Communicate regularly with teachers about student achievements and concerns

Parental Engagement

  • Keep up-to-date about student achievements and concerns;

  • Encourage attendance and participation at HWC family-focused events


  • Preferred 4-year degree with an emphasis in education or equivalent experience (e.g. teaching, counseling, administration, social work, criminal justice, and the social sciences)

  • Ability to manage groups of students and individuals well

  • Engage a variety of students in activities

  • Interact positively with students and adults

  • Self-starter and problem solver

  • Experience working with elementary-age children

  • Works well independently and collaboratively

  • Strong administrative and organizational skills

  • Effective written and verbal communication skills

  • Computer literate: knowledge of educational software for elementary students a plus

  • Spanish language skills a plus

  • Department of Justice fingerprint clearance
