On any given day, over 50,000 students in Oakland wake up and go to school, but only 1% of black children attend a high performing district school. We are far from making sure all students in Oakland have access to a quality school.

Enter, The Oakland REACH (TOR) - we are a 501c3 organization co-founded by Executive Director, Lakisha Young , along with a fed-up a group of other Oakland public school parents in 2016. TOR is a parent led advocacy organization that is empowering parents from our most underserved communities to demand high quality schools for their children. If you want to be fired up by their energy, conviction, and their success to date, just watch this . The group’s first cohort started with just 50 parents participating in a fellowship to learn how to demand for more quality schools for their children.

To date, over 300 parents have graduated from this fel lowship, and currently offers several other leadership development opportunities in support of Oakland families. This March, The Oakland REACH had their first policy win, The Opportunity Ticket, which gives preference to families in failing schools to higher quality schools.

The Oakland REACH is a team of passionate parents, grandparents and guardians of Oakland public school K-12 students who are uniquely positioned to change the trajectory of the most underserved students in Oakland for years to come. The opportunity is huge, and to fuel our growth and impact, we need a Chief of Staff to support our team in catapulting us to the next level.

Description

As Chief of Staff, you were the magic sauce behind the scenes that fueled our team to ensure that so many more black and brown students attend a high performing Oakland public school vs. the 1% of black students that currently do.

Your mission is to manage our entire organizational infrastructure and to lend your strategic thinking and project management expertise to our Executive Director (ED) - who attends a lot of external meetings - our three (3) Deputy Managers, and our Program & Operations Manager, who are leading key portions of our programmatic work.

Job Responsibilities

1) Lead Our Strategic Planning Process

  • Partner with the ED to develop and refine our organization’s strategy through 2020. Lead our Executive Team in setting their annual and quarterly goals and support our team to prioritize and execute their goals

2) Manage Our Organizational Infrastructure

  • Set agendas 24 hours in advance for weekly Executive Team meetings and facilitate them to ensure they are effective

  • Set agendas for weekly Reach Academy meetings by 12pm the day before and ensure all Academy documents are polished (accurate data, correct spelling and grammar). Help facilitate these meetings as well

  • Manage our Program and Operations Manager who provides invaluable support and leadership across our multiple programs, managers our social media platforms, and oversees our office operations

  • Manage a Data Manager when we hire one

  • Create and maintain internal systems for tracking, evaluating and communicating our work; update and maintain shared external-facing systems for tracking progress towards goals

  • Possibly manage an Executive Assistant - assuming we hire one

  • Take meeting notes and share outcomes with ED

  • Partner with our Deputy Managers to ensure everyone benefits from a professional working environment

  • Represent us by participating in events and meetings to advance our work. This includes our fellowships, meetings and Board actions

3) Provide Programmatic Support

  • Serve as a thought partner/project manager to our three (3) Deputy Managers to ensure their programs are highly effective and meet our organizational wide goals (and help us get the word out there in ways like this)

4) Help Manage Our Board

  • Partner with our ED on Board management activities (we will have a new Board in place when you join our team!), preparing for Board meetings, and ensuring every member of our future Board has what they need to be successful

5) Manage Our Finances + HR Processes

  • Manage our grant reporting and manage up effectively to our ED on things like interim reports

  • Support ED on organizational wide budget by providing input on real time inputs and outputs

  • Manage financial services and HR contractor

  • Monitor our budget-to actual financial results on a quarterly basis and recommend adjustments as needed. Develop and maintain internal accounting controls and procedures. Review our financial reports and lead our annual budgeting process

Qualifications

While not all of these are requirements, our strongest applicants will see themselves in more of these competencies than not).

  • You have previous management experience and are really good at it. You have successfully moved work forward through supporting other people and helping to develop their leadership potential.

  • Your strategic thinking and project management skills are highly valued. You are a natural problem solver who brings an analytical and project management lens to your work. You create order out of chaos by identifying systems and processes in need of adjustment. You deeply understand organizational operations and can synthesize information to proactively recommend a plan of action.

  • You are known as an “utility player.” You move nimbly between different parts of the organization and partner seamlessly with others adding your valuable input that allows work to move forward better than it would otherwise and always at 100%.

  • You instinctually get other people and where they’re coming from. Our staff is made up of parents. Even if you are not a parent, your emotional experience allows you to understand where parents whose kids have been unfairly treated are coming from. You are positive, empathetic, flexible, and respectful of differences and love learning from others.

  • You are a strong builder + nurturer of organizational culture. You have moved the needle forward in all of the organizations you’ve supported.
