Reports to: EHS Early Childhood Education Manager

Summary: Serve as a role model and coach to parents by providing child development services, social services, health services and parent involvement services to families including home visits, socializations, advocacy and crisis intervention in accordance with federal, state and program guidelines.  The Early Childhood Educator is responsible for delivering prenatal education and home based services as defined by the Head Start Program Performance Standards, in the 90001 area for families and their children 0-3 years.


  • Position is 20 hours/week

  • Flexible hours (evenings and Saturdays will be required)

  • $14.00-$15.00 Depending on Experience (DOE) plus benefits, including medical, dental, vision, retirement plan and Personal Time Off (PTO).

Job Responsibilities

  • Conduct weekly home visits with 6-8 families

  • Facilitate bi-monthly socialization activities in partnership with other Early Childhood Educators and families.

  • Plan home visits and socialization activities according to home base curriculum and Head Start Program Performance Standards.

  • Complete developmental screenings and ongoing assessment of eligible children and their families.

  • Assist Early Childhood Education Manager and other service area program coordinators with assessing and supporting individual family strengths, needs, choices and child’s development.

  • Establish positive, supportive and reciprocal relationships with families, children, and community resources.

  • Refer the child and the family to community resources as needed.

  • Support the transition of families from Early Head Start to Head Start or other preschool programs

  • Assist parents of children with disabilities to insure they are involved in the planning and implementation of all EHS program services.

  • Assist pregnant women to access comprehensive prenatal and post-partum care.

  • Participate in weekly and monthly staff meetings for case conferencing and reflective supervision.

  • Provide and maintain appropriate data and files of children and families as defined by the Head Start Program Performance Standards.

  • Assist in program evaluation as required by Early Head Start

  • Participate in on-going professional development to better serve EHS families

  • Participate in reflective Supervision meetings and attend relevant trainings.

  • Demonstrate ability to work independently and as an effective member of a multidisciplinary team.

  • Participate in Early Childhood & Family Engagement and other LAEP departments in staff meetings and trainings.

  • Maintain a professional attitude, confidentiality, and respect cultural differences.

  • Flexible hours (some evenings and Saturdays will be required)

  • Perform other duties as assigned


Any combination of experience that could likely provide the required knowledge and abilities would be qualifying.  A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

  • Required: Child Development Associate Credential (CDA)

  • Associates degree (AA) in child development or a Bachelor degree (BA) in Child   Development, plus 1-year experience in home visitation or childcare or as a teaching assistant preferred.

  • Strong communication and organizational skills and interpersonal.

  • Good computer skills required. Proficient in Microsoft Office (Work and Excel)

  • Local residence or familiarity with the community in the 90001 Zip Code and surrounding area a plus.

  • Bilingual in English/Spanish preferred

  • Early Head Start knowledge preferred

 Physical and Mental Requirements:

  • While performing the duties of this job, the Early Childhood Educator is frequently required to sit; stand; stoop; bend; walk; talk; hear; use hands to grip, type; reach with hands and arms, occasionally required to stand or walk on uneven surfaces; and climb stairs.

Environmental Factors and Working Conditions:

  • Early Childhood Educators will serve children and their families in their home environments and community environments. Some client environments are tile; some are carpeted; some are heated and some may or may not have air conditioning.

Licensing and Certification Requirements:

  • If method of transportation to home visits is a car, must provide own vehicle, valid Driver’s License and proof of full vehicle insurance coverage; First Aid certification and Child CPR certification-required. Health Exam is required; Negative tuberculosis screen (required); Hepatitis B Vaccination (recommended). Must pass criminal background check.
