Part of the community since 1891, Boys & Girls Clubs of San Francisco (BGCSF) currently serves 1,634 youth (ages 6-18) per day. We serve more than 19,000 youth per year at eight Clubhouses located in the neighborhoods with the fewest resources, one extension site, four school-based sites and Camp Mendocino, a 2,000-acre residential summer camp that provides a creative and fun outdoor experience for youth.  We are open “when kids need us most” – after school, on most school holidays and during the summer.  We offer safe places where young people can learn, grow, and succeed.


The primary role of the Director of Learning & Development (DLD) is to lead the organization’s training and professional development program. This includes partnering with leadership team and key stakeholders to develop training curriculum for program and administrative staff. The goals for the position are to improve staff engagement and retention, track staff’s completion of training, collaborate with the Human Resources Department to develop career-paths for key positions, and support the Human Resources Department to market professional development in the hiring process and beyond. This position also supervises the Learning & Development Coordinator.

Training & Professional Development opportunities are directed to the following groups by these approximate percentages: Program staff (80%) and Administrative staff (20%).

Job Responsibilities

Development of training program - 40%

  • Partner with the internal Training Advisory Committee and the HR Committee to support the recommendation and delivery of training programs
  • Assess needs, as well as design, implement and manage ongoing training programs to influence highest development of staff for purposes of maximizing performance, developing careers, and reaching the organizations strategic goals, including retention and engagement
  • Identify youth development trends and incorporate them into staff trainings in a way that provides social and experiential learning opportunities
  • Expand and develop content for all new and existing programs
  • Develop and maintain Subject Matter Expertise (SME) knowledge base in core areas related to BGCSF services including youth development, youth employment/workforce development, academic success/education, youth leadership, and health and fitness awareness
  • Ensure BGCSF’s core values and organizational philosophies are incorporated in all learning and development activities
  • Ensure adult learning principles and member focus are incorporated into all training activities
  • Collaborate with youth development organizations to deliver relevant trainings and develop partnerships as needed

Administrative - 30%

  • Compile and maintain library of existing and newly developed trainings (videos, PowerPoint, etc.)
  • Partner with the Director of Impact & Evaluation to develop trainings for identified skill gaps
  • Create and implement a feedback process; expand them based on expected program outcomes and provide periodic updates to key stakeholders
  • Conduct content updates based on feedback gathered to continue to create measureable impact
  • Develop and execute the planned annual training calendar in collaboration with key leadership and report on progress and impact
  • Promote and inform Staff of all training programs and events
  • In collaboration with Human Resources, ensure onboarding process integrates key trainings for all new staff
  • Create visuals that graphically depict training program components and outcomes to support marketing of programs in hiring process and beyond
  • Create resource guide of external trainings and establish a vetting system
  • Develop and manage tracking system for all trainings that program and administrative staff attend
  • Lead the planning and implementation of annual staff development conference, Mini-Conference, in partnership with staff planning committee

Facilitation - 30%

  • Facilitate management orientation program to introduce new managers to the expected leadership approach and management skills
  • Develop and host train the trainer sessions for staff to ensure delivery of training meets organizational standards
  • In collaboration with the Learning & Development Coordinator, facilitate New Staff Orientation, Integration and Emerging Leaders Program and other programs as developed
  • Develop and deliver manager trainings in collaboration with key leadership and external or internal trainers
  • Facilitate and plan all other staff training days in partnership with Club leadership teams
  • Deliver trainings as needed to staff teams across the organization



  • Experience developing and facilitating customized curriculum
  • Strong facilitation skills
  • Strong ability to organize data and processes and archive for future reference
  • Ability to manage multiple projects concurrently
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university, or equivalent experience
  • A minimum of 5 years work experience in a youth serving non-profit organization
  • Ability to navigate learning needs and resources to determine if it’s better for the organization to 'build' or 'buy' the solution
  • Ability to present information effectively
  • Ability to manage and/or collaborate with other training resources
  • Strong analytical skills and attention to detail
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with drive and passion for development of people
  • Proven ability to influence and build relationships both within the organization and with external sources
  • Ability to work with minimal to moderate supervision
  • Thorough knowledge of youth development theory


  • Strong computer skills; specifically well-versed in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint; familiarity with marketing design programs (Canva, Adobe)
  • Familiarity with Learning Management Systems
  • Ability to drive an automobile in CA


  • Must be able to lift 15 lbs.
  • Must be able to stand for at least 1 hour
  • Must be able to sit at computer workstation for long time periods
