PATHWAYS: Partnering to Advance Training and Hiring of Workers in Afterschool Youth Services

CalSAC first experimented with their workforce development theory in the PATHWAYS (Partnering to Advance Training and Hiring of Workers in Afterschool Youth Services) project in 2004-2006 in Contra Costa County. This model was the first time CalSAC partnered with a Workforce Investment Board (WIB) and community colleges to create career pathways and college preparation for under-prepared incoming college students.

In this model, a bridge program is offered as an abbreviated college semester to provide remedial academic instruction to new college students. This bridge to career pathways model is based off of the Career Advancement Academies that several California community colleges currently implement. During the bridge program, the students attend CalSAC training specific to working with youth in afterschool settings. Upon completion of the bridge program, the students are expected to enroll full-time in community college while working part-time in an afterschool program. CalSAC facilitates the hiring process with local employers.

Afterschool Corps

As a lower intensity model for recruiting and preparing community members to work in afterschool programs, CalSAC also created the Afterschool Corps model. Afterschool Corps piloted in San Francisco and Oakland in 2005-2006 and recruited young adults in the community for part-time afterschool jobs.

This model relies on partnerships with local youth employment agencies and other employment offices for referrals of job seekers. Similar to the PATHWAYS model, participants complete both pre-employment training and job coaching for a stipend, and CalSAC facilitates the hiring process for the job seekers.

With both of these models, CalSAC is creating opportunities that benefit young adults across a range of long-term career paths, while also helping afterschool programs address their staffing needs.
